TRAPPED ON THE BORDER

Thousands of refugees and migrants ended up as involuntary pawns in a power struggle between Turkey and the EU in early spring 2020. The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared that the border to Europe was open and that Turkey would let refugees and migrants enter the EU.

Because of this a large number of refugees and migrants went to the border in hope of crossing the border legally. Many of them were families with children that in many cases had been living in Turkey for years.

But their hope of a new future was in vain. The Greek authorities closed the border on their side, and thousands of refugees and migrants were caught in the border area with no place to go.
